York

Born in York, Attree has explored the city as subject matter for most of his career. While he initially found York’s beauty and historical associations something of a creative barrier, in his efforts to overcome this, he took an increasingly abstract approach to painting the city. And his abstraction, being solidly based on direct observation, progressively influenced his impasto technique and constructive approach to his subject.
