After Bruegel

Attree’s recent work sprang from an enduring fascination with the work of Pieter Bruegel the Elder.

I suppose it’s an obsession, really. Bruegel seems to epitomise to me the very best of the Northern European tradition: my transcriptions and “works after” always seem so hopelessly inadequate that I can only hope - to quote Samuel Beckett - “to fail better”.
